Question
I just adopted a 6mo old female pot bellied pig from my local humane society, she has started rubbing her snout on our legs and we have a terrible time getting her to stop.  It actually hurts like a rug burn.  Why is she doing this and how can we get her to stop???

Answer
Yes it can hurt a lot when pigs rub their snouts on peoples legs! It's surprising how hard and painful it can be.

This usually means the pig wants something, and wants it right away! Females in heat often do this, too. Intact female pigs suffer from piggy PMS. Often they will forget their potty training at that time of the cycle, too. Spaying, along with a little training, will stop the problem. Without spaying, the pig is at the mercy of her hormones.

The best thing to do is not allow this behavior at all. Ever. If it's allowed once in a while, or just a little bit, or only with this one person, the behavior will just continue and quickly get out of hand again. Every time piggy starts to nose a leg, push her snout away and say NO loudly and sharply. If she gets more aggressive, or continues after 5 or 6 attempts, then take her to her time out space, and give her a 5 minute time out. Let her out, and distract her by asking her to do some simple tricks, or go outside to potty, or lay at your side and feet, or play with a toy like a paper bag with apple wedges inside.
