Question
Hello,
We just got an 8 week old mini pig (Quincy). And we were wondering what are good fruits and vegetables to feed him. We discovered he likes apples, but doesn't care too much for carrots. Is it okay to feed him bananas?

Also, about how much weight should he be gaining. I weighed him 4 days ago and then weighed him again, but he had not gained any weight. Is this okay or should we increase the amount of food we feed him?

I am also concerned about his flaky skin. Is it natural for it to shed at his age? He does not seem bothered by it and only scratches occasionally. I have put baby oil on him, but baby lotion seemed to work better. Is it okay for us to use that?

He has an appointment with the vet this Thursday were we will discuss his shots and getting him neutered. Is there anything I should maybe ask about his skin. He has not been wormed, but we wanted to wait till after we saw the vet for that.

Thank-You for reading

Answer
Pigs can eat any edible fruit or vegetable, including bananas. Some pigs will eat citrus rinds, banana peels, and corn husks, but those items belong in the compost bin, not in the pig food dish.

Piglets 15 lb and under should get 1/2 cup of mini pig food per day, divided into two or three meals, plus fresh vegetables and fruits, which make good training treats. Piglets over 15 lb need about 1/2 cup per day per 15 lb of piglet (a 30 lb pig needs 3/4 cup).

Healthy piglets should gain about 1 lb per week. They should be energetic and have bright, clear eyes. Rib and hip bones should not be visible.

Pig skin is naturally dry and flaky. Excessive dryness may be a sign of mange or malnutrition. You can use any lotion made for human skin on a pig. Corn Huskers Lotion is an inexpensive, non-greasy, readily available brand. Another symptom of mange is a dark orange stain or "dirt" in the soft folds behind the elbows or between the legs. Your vet can check for mange mites by taking a skin scraping.
