6 week old piglet not eating

Question
I brought home my piglet 3 days ago, he's 6 weeks old and has not really been eating. He eats grass when I let him outside and picks up a few small pieces of food but will not eat the food I hand feed him or put in his bowl. The breeder I bought him from told me I should try putting his food in milk and let it settle and try to see if he ate that. He licked it a few times but also didn't eat that. I'm not sure what to do because the breeder said he was eating on his own and was weaned, any suggestions?

Answer
Because your piglet is already grazing, I'm going to assume the breeder provided you with a fairly accurate age.

Moving to a new home is traumatic for a piglet. They've been torn from everything they've ever known and loved, and thrown into a new place with new people, new animals, new smells, new everything. It's natural for them to be very nervous about eating for a day or two.

Give him a safe space with a litter box and bed. Not too big, a closet or laundry room is fine. Feed him in there, so he feels safe and secure enough to eat comfortably.

It helps to feed piggy the same thing the breeder was feeding him. But if that's not possible, then offer him goat milk or sow replacement formula or infant formula, at room temperature or slightly warm, in a shallow dish.

Starter pellets are made for young piglets, but you can feed him regular adult pot-bellied pig food. Put a few pieces in the warm milk, and let them dissolve. Gradually add more pellets at each meal until it's the consistency of oatmeal. At that point, you can either reduce the milk at each meal until he's eating the pellets dry, or gradually switch to water and continue feeding the pellets soaked.

Try introducing bits of fresh vegetables when piggy is outside grazing. Carrots, cucumbers, celery, lettuce and spinach are all good choices.
