suspected hoof injury

Question
We recently picked up our new little pigger and I thought her hooves were a little black from the barn area. Once we got her home I started to clean her up and noticed three of her hooves had gouges?? to the top of the hoof by the hairline the hoof is blackened under the gouge and tender. She also has an infection mid-leg on the foreleg. Is this injury? Do pigs get hoof rot? What does hoof rot look like? I'm pretty concerned and not at all happy with the condition of our baby.I've put triple antibiotic on the gouges and the small area of infection, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Because you are describing damage to the bed of the hoof, where the hoof grows from, and because this is a baby piglet, I think you should get her to a vet to prevent permanent damage or lameness, especially since you are concerned about her general condition.

There is a list of vets that see pot-bellied pigs here: http://www.petpigs.com/vet_list/map.html

Horses and sheep often get hoof rot. But pigs seldom do, because of the structure of their hooves. And a baby should not have hoof rot, her condition is almost certainly due to injury.

If the link below does not work, go to Google, choose Images from the upper left side of the screen, then type "hoof rot" into the Image Search box.
