Question
Hello.  We just picked up a 7 week old baby female potbelly to serve as a companion to our 9 month old female mini potbelly.  Just wondering when it would be safe to introduce the two?  The new baby is only about 4lbs, while Lilly, our 9mo old is around 75.  I'm just afraid Lilly will hurt the baby, inadvertently or otherwise.  Can you give me some advice on how and when to introduce the two and if you can foresee any problem that might cause.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
Congratulations!
Wait a week so Lilly has time to get used to her smell.
Then introduce them. This will upset Lilly's world until they can be buds.
The baby will pester Lilly until Lilly is forced to snap in the air or run her off. This is NORMAL herd behavior and necessary.
This is GOOD, you want to support Lily as top hog.
That is because pigs have a pecking order and they cannot be friends until the baby respects Lilly's space.
Do not punish Lilly. The baby will quickly learn to watch out for Lilly.
This is good that it is a baby, because the baby will give in easier than if you had another 75# pig.....THAT is where the injuries occur.
Pigs don't usually harm babies!
It will be scary, but the baby is faster than Lilly, (make sure she has space to run away) but in the end the pigs will be friends!
