When can piggy live outside?

Question
We have an 8 week old pot belly female living in the house.  She is about 10 pounds now and is eating very well and socializing nicely. We ultimately want her to live outside - we have a pen outside that houses a couple of nanny goats that she will live in. It has a shelter, and we intend to give her a doghouse to use as well.

Our question is - when is she old enough to live outside? We live in  north Florida where temps can range from 25 - 80 degrees this time of year.

Answer
Piglets stay very close to their mom and siblings. Your piglet is bonding to you like her family, she would be very uncomfortable if left alone outside right now. Also, piglets need consistent temperatures, like indoors. It's difficult for baby pigs to handle cold winter temperatures or drastic temperature changes.

For now, focus on bonding with her and training her. Teach her simple commands like "sit", "twirl", "stay" and "come". Teach her to wear a harness and walk on a leash. Get her used to being outside by taking her for walks on her harness on comfortable days.

By the time she's about 6 months old, she'll be ready to spend some time outside by herself, start by putting her in her pen and leaving her there for a short time, like 15 minutes or so. Next time, leave her alone longer. She may be happier in her pen if she gets one of her meals when she goes into the pen.
