Aging pot bellied pigs indoor litter training

Question
Hi Helen
I have an 18 yr old female pot bellied pig.  She has been going outdoors to do her business since she was 6 weeks old. We are trying to teach her how to go indoors in a litter box as winter is so  hard on her and we are looking to get away for a couple of weeks while a pig sitter stays at our home. She simply will not go in the large litter box we custom built. Can you make any suggestions?  Thanks so much

Answer
Well this could be tricky. Pigs learn quickly but unlearn very slowly. This is a lot of unlearning to do!

I'd try to make a litter box set up that resembles the usual potty spot as much as possible. Use the same kind of material, grassy sod or gravel or whatever. Sod will probably be really heavy so maybe go for more grass less dirt, but keep it natural.

Also, I'd put it in some sort of semi-outdoor spot, so piggy feels like piggy is going outside. Maybe a garage or porch. Put some of piggy's poo in the box so piggy understands, and reward piggy for going potty in the box.
