pot belly spay recovery concerns

Question
Firstly, thank you so much for all this information on pbp! This site has been a HUGE help with all my questions, & concerns of pb pigs!

Ive adopted a 10 month old female. Had her spayed yesterday morning (Friday, March 9) They called me that afternoon to say she was up and moving around and that everything went well. (I did call before I made her appointment to make sure the vet used ISO gas and they confirmed that they only use ISO.)

I picked her up that same afternoon and brought her home. The vet tech informed me that I only needed to feed her half of the normal amount of food she was used to eating because the post affects of the anesthetic can make her nauseous. So I only put 1/4 cup in her bowl. She had no interest. And I had read on the "AllExperts" site that a pb pig's throat might be sore from a tube that is put down their throat during a surgery.

She drank a few gulps of water and then laid down for the nite. This much I expected. But on saturday morning (today) she still had no interest in food. She drank a few gulps of water in the morning and proceeded to sleep. Towards the mid part of the day she started moving around more and rooting around on the carpet. She did walk outside for about 30 minutes and urinated. (No poo but I assumed that was expected since she hadn't eaten since Thursday evening.) After she was back inside I decided to mush her pellets in warm water to make a mush for her to eat easily. That worked and she ate about 1/4 cup of mushed pellets.
Drank a bit and then went back to lie down. As the day progressed she seemed more listless. No more getting up or rooting. I called the vet tech and she said to wait 24 hrs and if she hadn't eaten much or is still listless by Sunday afternoon to call the emergency line and let them know.

Im so concerned about her at this point. Her nose is warm and dry. She does seem to shiver a bit. Not noticeable by just looking at her, only if I place my hand on her body. Tonight (Saturday nite) I bought some goat milk and warmed it. She didnt get up but picked her head up and drank about 1 cup and then lied back down to sleep. The vet did not give me any meds to take home for her. My heart breaks because I feel like she might be in a lot of sore pain or something more serious. I have not attempted to check her temp as Im worried this might make her jump up and cause pain or injury to the surgery site.

So my main concern is should she still be this lethargic past 24 hrs after a spay? Is this common for pot bellys after a surgery? Thank you so so much!

Answer
Hello,
Most of my experience is with younger females 5 months or younger.  I have not had a 10 month old spayed before as younger is better.
It is my experience that the ISO slows their digestive system down.  I Usually don't offer feed until 24 hours after their surgery and then just small amounts for the next 24 hours.  By then they are back to normal as far as their feeding goes.
As your piglet is older she will probably take a bit longer to recoup.
Make sure she has liquids such as pedialite to keep her hydrated.  Pigs can go a while without feed but must have plenty of liquids.
I would be concerned about her snout being dry and warm.   You can give her baby aspirin in the water.   Use a larger syringe for the liquids if needed to keep well hydrated.
I would differently talk to your Vet if she doesn't show signs of getting back to normal very soon.
Hope this helps,
Patty
