Scary skin problem in PB

Question

eye
Hello,
I have a 3 yo spayed pot belly who is an outside pig.  For her whole life mange mites have been a chronic problem.  Ivermectin and dusting never make it go away but fortunately she's not usually bothered by it.  18 months ago she went bald and got cracks in her skin and the vet treated her for a staph infection.  For the past few weeks she's had drier and flakier skin than is typical so her dad put sevin dust on her maybe a week ago.  Today we noticed some very scary looking wounds.  Scaly plug-like scabs in on her back and side and an inch accross (she's always gotten small plug-like scabs on her ankles before I attributed to mites.  Even more frightening is a large deep crack like wound in her eye-fold.  She's not opening her eye, but I pried it open and it in uninjured but a little red in the whites.  I'm afraid she could lose it.  Her temperament is normal. I think she has a fever of 100.4.  I have a vet who is supposed to call me to discuss but no one is available to make house calls today.  Do you know what her probablem is and have any advice on what to do until she sees a vet?  Is it staph? Erysipelas? (she hasn't been vaccinated for it since she was a piglet).  I think I can only attach one pic so i attached her eye, but if you email be at lynnisp(at)gmail(dot)com I can send pics of the skin too.

Thank you SO MUCH for the kind service you provide to the public, we really appreciate it!

Answer
Skin problems in potbellied pigs are related to mange about 80 percent of ther time. Erysipelas is big red welts and a high temperature.
We suggest 3 INJECTIONS of Ivermectin  2 weeks apart for sarcoptic mamge..
Sevin dust won't help much.
But this could be staph or even a fungus. Or ingrown hairs..
Brushing off the dead skin, giving fish oil caps, a good pig feed and fresh veggies , and bathing often might help.

Unfortunately, some potbellied pigs have really nasty skin.
I wish I could help more.
I have mystified the vets with one of my pigs whose skin was horrible.
I tried everything! She was a Royal Dandy.
Can you send me pics of her skin at nelliestar@aol.com?
Sorry,
Priscilla
