Question
Hi
I have a 10 day old pot bellied pig, I live in South Africa and there is not alot of help here on these animals I have been feeding her from the bottle since she was 2 days old as mom was killing all the piglets, she is tiny but need to try and get her to feed from a bowl (she is drinking a pig replacement milk), is this possible and how do i start.

Answer
It's easy to teach baby piggies to eat from a pan. Choose a shallow dish. It's easier on piggy, and less messy, to use a small dish that may need refilling.

Just put the warm milk in the pan, put it down in front of hungry piggie, and she will most likely start drinking. If not, put piggie in front of the dish, dip a piece of soft bread in the milk, then hold the bread up to piggy's snout, so she can suck the milk off the bread. Then drop the bread in the dish, and piggy should start eating.

Pot-bellied piglets should gain about 1 lb per week. After piggie is drinking from the dish, start adding cereal to the mix, and a pig pellet or two. Each day, add a few more pellets. When piggie is about 3 or 4 weeks old, start offering other bits of food. Piggie will probably just taste and spit them out. By the time piggy is 5 or 6 weeks old, she should be actually eating the other bits of food. At about 7 pr 8 weeks, start reducing the amount of milk on the pellets. Some piggies don't like the texture of pellets, so it's ok to mix the pellets with water to make a mush.
