Question
My 8 month old pot bellied pig has a hernia and cannot be castrated but was wondering any other way to help not let him breed with My 5 Month old micro pig lexi and lately pudding on his frot legs the skins cracked and looks mouldy any suggestions?

Answer
I am not a veterinarian and can not make a medical diagnosis over the internet. I do know that having a hernia does not prevent a male pig from being castrated. One of my own pigs had a hernia. The hernia was repaired and the pig was castrated in the same surgery when he was three weeks old. Most pot-bellied pig vets will neuter when they perform hernia repair surgery.

If your regular vet does not feel comfortable enough with pot-bellied pigs to do both the hernia surgery and the neuter, there's a list of pot-bellied pig veterinarians at www.farec.org

Getting your female spayed will prevent her from breeding with your male pig, or any other male pig.

Pigs can get skin infections, from mold, fungus and bacteria. Wash the area daily and apply an over the counter anti-bacterial product, like bactine or neosporin. If the skin does not improve in a couple of weeks, piggy will need to see a vet. The vet can take skin scrapings, and test them to determine what is causing the problem, and prescribe the correct medication.
