Duplocillin for rats? (Boo Boo)

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

Boo Boo isnt doing well, and as you said the Clorpalm didnt do much but surpress the symptoms. She has been off of it since wednesday and the poor thing is sniffling and sneezing (but her breathing is stable...for now).

Amoxil is sooo expensive from the vets, as i told you $37. So iam going to try and get a script from the vet and get amoxil from the pharmacy, its a long shot but i will try.

I found a friend that has Duplocillin, do you think it might work?

It is for injection, the antibiotic contains:

Procaine Penicillin G (B.P) 150,000 i.u per ml
Benzathine Penicillin 150,000 i.u per ml

The description says:

For treatment of infections caused by bacteria sensitive to penicillin in large and small animals where long acting therapy is required.

Dosage for a 5kg cat is 0.5ml

ANSWER: Hi

The Clorpalm didnt work because, well, this is hard to describe, but, its a good drug and all, but it just isnt enough for a rats stubborn infection at times.  It can work on some types of mycoplasmosis but I feel this is not the case. I believe that the problem is a nasty secondary infection along with mycoplasmosis.

I wish you have a vet that was able to resolve this instead of you spending all sorts of money with online stuff that may even be a rip off.

Have you ever given your rat an injection? Its done in the flank area where the most "meat" is found but rats usually object to it pretty much and some medications can leak at the site and cause nasty ulcers, especially baytril. In fact, baytril shots should be avoided and the first dose should be nebulized so it gets into the lungs.

One thing that can happen (and I am starting to suspect this is the case with your rat) is this: Sometimes, after damage has been done to the lungs, infection isnt always the reason for what is going on. Instead, it could be due to lung scarring from chronic respiratory infections, and medications to help with inflammation and also opening the airways may help more. Steroids (with yet another round of antibiotics)are warranted in some cases as well as albuterol which will help open the rats airways.

The antibiotics are needed when steroids are used because of the chance the steroids will compromise the immune system and the antibiotics will help prevent infection.
Anyhow, just some stuff to think about...

QUESTION: my vet doesnt have albuterol, iam trying really hard to work with what i have. I know Boo Boo probably will not pull out of this, i bought her because she was in bad shape at the pet shop, i took her so she could have the rest of her life happy. I bleieve she is a little over or under 2years old.

The Duplocillin is an injection, but i remeber you or someone else saying you could give Baytril injectables orally with some jelly, i dont know if you could do that with this Duplocillin.

What i meant about the script from the vet. Many people told me you can get a script from them and go to your local pharmacy, lets say walmart, and get medication there. Someone told me that amoxil can be $4 from a pharmacy, alot better than $37 LOL

I found another option for my little fur ball. Our Equine vet, might be kind enough to give me medician if he has the right antibiotics. I will call him on monday.

So Duplocillin is a No No?

ANSWER: No, I would skip the duplo.  Baytril and valium injectables can be given orally and something tells me ivermectin can too...but I may be wrong with the ivermectin so dont quote me on that...but not all medications can be used orally when they are meant for injestionc and also can be dangerous if it is  given orally.  Wow I just notice what a run on sentence that was.  LOL
I suck at math and english and hurray for sell checker here although I dont always use it...it seems slow lately.  Either that, or I overwhelm the freakin thing by having too many typos! LOL

Here is what you said earlier:

Ok I have heard of that...you can get human grade meds this way, too. In fact not that far back this was a perfect way for people to obtain narcotics (pain meds such as vicodin and tylenol 3's as long as it was a schedule lll I think) The DEA cracked down though because of course, people that were addicts were abusing this system and it shut down these pharms super fast. Arrests were made, of course, and the people that truly needed pain medication and that had little funding for it and this was the cheapest route to go were SOL because one bad apple? It spoils the whole bunch!!!!!!

I am a chicken though and would never mess with that stuff for legal reasons and see how it turned out? Bad news.
I also heard alot of these places are fakes and can make the animal or person sick but if you do some sort of consult with their vets and he scripts out something and another place fills it, what would be an ok idea as long as it wasnt shady.

what is the URL again?  I lost it......

QUESTION: Oh LOL you got me wrong again. What iam saying is that i can possibly get the meds from my pharmacy, where i get my medican after seeing the doctors which is usually at Shoppers Drug Mart. The only thing is, is that i have to get a script (or a letter) from the vet but by doing that, the vets dont get any profit from it because i will be buying the drugs from a pharmacy.

I am not going to take chances with the online pharmacys.

About the law, yes i see your point, but they might allow it since a qualified vet has written me a script. If that doesnt work i have a very nice doctor that may perscribe me a few amoxil tablets.

How many tablets/ml should i get for my rat?

Answer
Oh my gosh you would think my head was made of brick or something. I promise you I am more intelligent than this!!  LOL!!

Now, what are we talking as for as the tabs you want? The amoxil?

Ask for AMOXI-DROPS!  ALL VETS should have these on hand! If not,
the tabs come in these strengths:
50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, tabs.

I guess see how much they are per pill. The rat, if given the 50mg, that one tab would last for four doses or so, and that would be twice a day so one tab would last two days. Use should be for at least 14 days for secondary infection. I suck in math...totally stink and I dont do this part when it comes to rats so I would say it would be safe to buy at least 8 of the 50 mg pills. That would get you far!

I hope I got it right this time and understood better. DUH!  LOL!
