Question
I have bought two new rats from a pet shop which I know is bad but I wasn't able to find a breeder and they were handled and looked friendly but nervous. They are both males and are super frightened. One of them is bolder than the other and takes food off me and comes to the door and sometimes lets me stroke his back but the other is just terrified. The bolder one sometimes nibbles too, not hard enough to hurt or draw blood, just a nibble. I want to tame them but I don't know where to start and the last thing I want is to hurt them or frighten them anymore than they are. I've been letting them smell me and hand feeding them bits and bobs but not sure where to go from here and they show no interest in coming out the cage, even when I leave the door open.Could you advise what would be the best option to get them to trust me?

Answer
Yes, the best way to get them to trust you is to let them get to know you first, never try to pick them up.  Also, you need to make a nice safe play area for them, put the cage inside it and just sit down and wait for them to come out. They will...it just takes time.

I have my own website, sandyscrittercity.com. Please visit my site and  go to the page on how to trust train biting or scared rats.  Also, check out the GETTING STARTED page which shows how to set up the play area etc... so your rat feels secure enough to come out in his own play area.

Let me know after you read it.
