too hard to handle

Question
Hello there,

I absolutely love my new baby boy rats, They are beautiful an di adore them!  Problem is they are VERY nervous.
I've had them about a week and a half and have only taken them out once.
They got used to my voice pretty quickly, i spend ages with my hand in the cage and on rare occasions they take treats out of my hand, but if i approach them to pick them up they get very upset and hide.
I was thinking this may be to do with the fact that they have a lot of hiding places in their cage (long tubes and ledges to hide under), so than rather go towards my hand and investigate they would much rather peg it to a hidy hole ha ha. I was thinking of maybe taking them out and putting ladders in instead and a single house for them to sleep in?

I love my new boys and would be very grateful if you have any ideas for gentle coaxing out of their comfort zone. I would love to give them a little cuddle!

Answer
Honestly, you have to just keep working with them. I suggest taking them both out of the cage, sitting in a small, contained area such as a bathroom, and giving them a particular, special treat only when they approach you. The more you handle them, the more they'll get used to you. Otherwise, you have a good start.
