crossbreeding amazons

Question
I have just started to raise amazons. I have a pair of Double-Yellow Heads and a pair of Blue Fronts. Along with them, the breeder I bought them from also gave me a female Mexican Redhead, and a male Orange Wing, who have been kept together, and are bonded to each other. They have been seen mating. I want to know if I can let them breed? I know you can do this with macaws, but what about amazons? I hate to separate them because they are so close. What do you call the offspring if they were successful?
Any info would be greatly apperciated.
Thank you

Answer
Hello Kelley,

I'm not sure if it's actually possible to cross-breed the Amazon species to create hybrids. I think there is something different in regards to their DNA that doesn't allow it. I think you can with similar sub-species, such as the Blue Fronts and Orange Wings, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Hybrids aren't a natural thing, and many breeders find it immoral..mainly because it is making the blood "dirty", or the line. Its in each person's own opinion. In my opinion, you should leave them together since they are well bonded and just let them live their lives out together. If you would prefer to breed them, then I suggest finding them new mates. If you were to decide to breed them and they actually did produce offspring, they would be "hybrids", not sure what you would call them really, Orange Wing-Mexican Redheads I guess, haha.

Whatever your decision, it is your decision. Not many people will purchase hybrids, and not many people support the decision to interbreed the species, even if they are both Amazons!

Good luck!
