If a parakeet gets sick.

Question
If a parakeet gets sick is there any medicine or whatever you can give her/him to recover?

Answer
It depends on the cause of the illness. A vet who is experienced with birds, preferably an avian vet, needs to check him out and find the reason behind his being sick.
It could be a virus or a parasite. It could be a bacteria or disease. It also depends on where this problem is (from the crop to the liver).
Once this is decided, there are many medications that may possibly treat your companion. Sometimes the bird may require surgery, or injected medications. Other times it's just a matter of changing their food.

The ONE thing I'll warn you about is buying anything from a pet store without knowing for sure, from a vet, what's wrong. These products can make things worse, or even cause the bird to die. Only if the vet says it's ok, should anything like this be considered. Clerks in stores are not vets. Not even close.

It's important to get him seen pretty quick. A bird hides their illness until it's so far along that they can't hide it anymore. So by the time you see it or know about it, it's probably been going on for a while.

Getting help early is often the most successful AND the least expensive.

If you have a Pet Smart or Pet Co nearby, many times there are vets working out of those stores who know about birds. Call them and ask who to go to with your little friend.
Good luck - I hope this works out for you both!
