Baby Ringneck

Question
Hi, Could you tell me when do baby ringnecks leave the nest and are they able to
look after themselves or do the parents look after them for a while longer.  How
long before they can use their wings to fly.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi, Sandra,

Each baby bird is different, but most ringnecks would leave their nesting box at around 4 weeks of age, some later, some earlier, just depending on the individual bird and how well the bird is progressing.  When they first leave the nesting box (for parent raised babies), no, they cannot look after themselves completely.  Daddy ringneck teaches them what to eat, how to maneuver about the cage, etc., when the babies leave the nesting box.  It may take another month or longer before they will be able to fend for themselves completely, again, just depending on the individual bird.  Usually, they will take their first flight (fledge) when they are about 4-5 weeks old.
