Introducing a New Quaker

Question
Hi, and Thank you in advance for your time in answering my question. We have a Quaker that we have had for 2 yrs. now, and because me and my husband both work full time, we thought we would buy another Bird. We recently bought a hand feed baby quaker who is about 12 weeks old. We have them in separate cages now and have tried to put them together. My older bird whom by the way is attached to me and very tame and talkative, is a bit rough on the baby. The baby keeps following him though and going back for more. I keep a close eye to make sure my older bird doesn't hurt the baby. How long should I keep them apart, together. (we keep the cages near each other.) I am sure this will take time, but want to make sure we are doing it right. Thanks again, Vikki

Answer
Hello Vikki and thank you for posting.
It will take quite a long time for your older Quaker to accept the baby, and by all means, do not put the baby into the older Quaker's cage.
Quakers are very territorial and they will fight to the death for their territory, so the best way of introducing them is to keep them in seperate cages for a few weeks, or in some instances, even months.
Once they are aready to be put into the same cage (which, by the way, I really don't recommend as this could change the personality of the older Quaker), get a new cage that neither one has been in before and put them in that.  This is a neutral territory for them both and they might accept each other more readily.

Please keep me informed on how they are doing.

Good luck and God Bless.
