Do the males eat the baby parrots. My friend next door has about 6 eggs and was wondering?  Also how long does it take for the eggs to hatch? She said it has been 2 weeks and she is still laying on them.
Thank you

Hello,

What species of parrot are you speaking of?

I have heard of very FEW males eating the babies. That's something more a lion would do. Now, it can happen, but not very often. If it does, then that male definitely should not be used for breeding purposes ever again.

2 weeks isn't quite long enough, incubation usually takes at the very minimum 18 days for some lovies. For the most part, incubation of the eggs ranges from 21-28 days, depends on the species of parrot. Bigger the parrot, longer the incubation period. She still needs another 2 weeks before you decide those eggs are absolutely not fertile.

If you could provide me with some more info, I could better answer your questions!

Thanks,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Thank you for annswering me I am so sorry, but they are parakeets and not parrots. She has had the eggs for 2 weeks. Long much longer?

Also when they are born what kind of food  do you get for the adults when they have their babies and can I help in hand feeding them or should they be lefted alone to do it themselves (the parents).

Thanks so much

It will be the 20 days then, so since its been approximately 14 days, I would say another week and a half, I would give 2 weeks max because she might not have been incubation properly until after the second or third egg.

Just keep feeding the adults what you're giving them now which should be pellets, seed, cuttlebone, and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies as well as egg. Whole wheat bread is good as well.

If you've never handfed before, then I would recommend you leave the babies be, just let the parents do their job! Unless you have someone who can show you how to handfeed and can walk you through everything. The parents should be just fine taking care of the little ones themselves as long as you give them plenty of food! :)

Hope that helps,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Thank you so much again for your quick reply,
but I would like to ask one more question of you. After the parents take care of the babies how long after can you handle them and tame them ? How old can they be before you can get them out and mess with them so to speak? Again thank you so very much.

Answer
Hello again,

You can start handling them at around 2 weeks of age for short periods of time, say 15 minutes a few sessions a day to start taming them and handle them every day. You can take them out of the box for that amount of time then just put them back in when you're finished playing with them. As they get older and grow more feathers you can start to handle them for longer periods of time.

Take care,
Sarah
