Question
I have a Senegal parrot, I believe to be 5 yrs old. The last couple of days I have noticed that his dropping have very little to no liquid with them. Night before last I noticed undigested seeds in his droppings. The only time that he gets seeds is when he is trick training and I use safflower seeds that are not salted. He gets apples daily and tangerines every other day. He is on a mix of Zupreem fruit pellets and Zupreem natural pellets. He has fresh water and clean dishes daily. He gets some people food, but nothing with alot of salt. He eats some peas, (he does not like veg). My vet suggested to put some fruit juice in his water so I added some apple juice (no sugar added) to his water. I also noticed that he normaly poos after I let him out of his cage in the morning (on newspaper under his door) and when I put him back in his cage so that I can go to work, when I come home there are no droppings in his cage. He does have some droppings on his playstand. I also want to let you know that when he is in his cage he doesn't seem to move around alot. He is always sitting on his food bowl. He used to play on his swing and climb around. I don't know if this is because he has become overly attached to me or something else. He was just at the vets last month she did a vent swab and a throat swab. She didn't find much, she gave him an antibiotic because she said he had a few more gram positive rods in his throat than she would like to see. He at the vets 2 weeks ago for a wing clipping and nail trimming. I hate to keep taking him there if there is nothing wrong as a visit is 120.00, but I don't want to not take him if he needs it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Undigested seeds in droppings is not a good sign. This is a symptom that is most common in the deadly parrot diseases, especially PDD which has no known cure and is very contagious, PBFD, and Psittacosis (Which can be passed to humans and is also sometimes fatal). He needs to go to the vet right away and get tested for the big 3- PDD, PBFD, and Chlamydia (Psittacosis) and you should keep him away from ALL other birds-wash your hands, change your clothes, and until the results come back, you'll want to shower before touching or going near any other birds (It's that contagious). After the vet brings up the results of the tests, you'll want to clean everything that the bird has touched with bleach-not just antibacterial wipes. Those wont kill the big 3. You may want to go as far as cleaning your entire house and washing down the walls to make sure that NOTHING is left in your house that is contagious. If you decide not to treat or test the bird and it dies (I'm not going to say you're a terrible person for doing this, it does happen, though I wish it did not. I know that there are limits a person must put on bird expenses) you should throw out ALL bird-related things (cage, toys, food, etc) and completely sanitize your house before getting another bird. You will also need to sanitize yourself before going to a pet store or around other birds because you don't want to accidentally give the disease to someone elses bird!
I hope he is ok, this just sounds a lot like PDD. Please let me know how everything turns out! I'll keep him in my thoughts for you. Good luck!!
