Lovebird Eggs

Question
QUESTION: I have a female masked lovedbird and a male viloet lovebird.
They have had 3 eggs over a month ago, 2 of which i had to throw out last week as nothing happened after 30+days, the other egg is not doing anything either so I am about to throw this one out too. Any ideas as to why this has happened, also, when I get rid of the last egg, will they lay more? They constantly sit on this last egg but I dont think it is any good as it is over 30 days old, I feed the birds, seed, lettuce, celery and bread and water. Is there something I am doing wrong? What else do you recommend I feed them?

ANSWER: Well, you may not have a compatible pair as some lovebird sub-species are unable to breed. They may lay more, but you may have to wait until the next breeding season. You should NOT feed the birds seeds or bread as they are unhealthy. Keep up with the veggies, but put them on a high calcium diet-roudybush is the best for breeding birds. The nutritional problem most likely caused the eggs not to be fertile. Once the nutrition is balanced out, you'll probably have some babies!

QUESTION: Thankyou.
I removed the last egg last night. all had a yellow yolk but nothing else. What is so bad about bread? Also, can you recommend what vegies i can give them? What calcium foods can I give them?

Answer
Well, whole grain bread is fine, but white bread is unhealthy (for both us and them!) because it has too much sugar and the flour was processed too much. It can be used sparingly as a treat, but not as part of the diet. Any veggies they want are good for them, just no avocados, onions, and a few other ones (just search the web for a list of toxic foods for birds, it's too long to post here). Calcium can come in the form of cuttlebones, mineral perches, the roudybush food, small amounts of cheese (though it contains lots of fat and other things, it makes a nice calcium-rich treat) and I believe cheerios are now fortified with calcium.
