Bald eyed cockatoo

Question
My bird has been sneezing like crazy for a few months now and I brushed it off as dry air due to winter. However, in the last week she has been vomiting and drinking and eating less. I went to the pet store and got her vitmans, but she won't take them. I'm seriously considered for her health, but it's is still cold outside so I can't take her to the vet. What should I do?

Answer
Most birds will not take these products and rightly so.  I'm always upset to see these things sold and promoted by otherwise good pet stores.  They are not only a waste of money, but they are potentially dangerous.

Cockatoos are very dusty, powdery birds and sneezing as the result of that is not uncommon.  As long as there is no discharge and her other habits are normal (eating, drinking and droppings), some extra attention to vacuuming and perhaps installing a vaporizer in her room (no medications in it, just plain water) should help.

If you DO see other changes or discharge when she sneezes, especially if there's a color to the discharge, then she must be seen.  Pre-start your car so it's warm and put her in a deep box or pet carrier with a heavy blanket over it and she'll be fine going from the house to the car, the car to the vet and back again.
