Question
hi, normally i dont have any problems with birds but i do have a question about my cockatiel. he's at least 12 years old and he's losing his feathers. i watch him closely but he doesnt pick his feathers, they just fall out. is it possible that maybe its because of old age? poor diet maybe? we feed him seeds mixed with pellets and fresh fruits and veggies daily. i did some research but nothing came up. help please, i'm worried if he could be sick.
thanks

sarah

Answer
If you're sure this isn't a normal molt, you are probably dealing with a parasite/fungal or bacterial infection.  A vet needs to see the bird and probably get a skin scraping to determine exactly what it is.

Birds don't lose their feather like humans might lose their hair when they get older.  They may live long enough to have other changes, like arthritis or other health problems, but feather loss is something that is rarely caused by old age.

Since it could be the indicator of a more serious and complicated problem, getting him seen now is very important.  These wonderful little guys can live to be into their 20's these days and I'd love to hear that yours ends up a record breaker.

Good luck and keep up the good work!
