Question
Hi Chrys, I have a blue front Amazon, lately, he's been stuffing himself with food and regurgitate the food he ate, then swallow it back. He looks perfectly healthy, yell a lot, talks a lot too, but i'm afraid...is that normal? and another question, one of his nail was so spiky, so i trimmed it, but shame on me..i only trimmed a little bit but he bleed. I am so worry, although he looks ok today, no blood or anything, but is he gonna get infection? should i take him to an avian? Thanks.

Answer
Hi, Katy.  Thanks for posting.

I love blue fronts!  Have a few myself.  They can be pigs and are sometimes very loud!

Does he usually regurgitate when you are near him?  If yes, he's regurgitating to you because he considers you his mate, i.e., he loves you and this is his way of showing his affection toward you.  If he had a mate, he would be regurgitating to her.  Now if he's regurgitating  undigested seed and/or behaving differently, as if he could be ill, that's another story.

Not to worry about the nail.  As long as the bleeding has stopped, he'll be just fine.  You might want to clean the tip of the nail with a Q-tip dipped in some alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to prevent infection.  However, I've done this same thing hundreds of times to parrots and have never had one bird that got an infection.  He might also want to hold his leg/foot up for a few days, but this is because it's a bit sore, depending on how far down you trimmed.  This is the same as when you cut your fingernail or toenail down too far...it hurts a bit for a couple of days.  No need to take him to an avian vet.

Need more help, come back.
