lovebird missing feathers on wing

Question
QUESTION: Hi,  I have a lovebird that is four months old. she is going through her first moult and everything is smooth except we have noticed that she has about five beautiful cream colored feathers at the bottom of her wing on the left side and only one on the right side.  When she tries to fly she starts to scream and carry on as if in a great deal of pain.  Does this have something to do with only having that one cream feather on the right wing.  I hate seeing her like that and I am at a loss. This is my first pet bird and our nearest avian vet is over an hour away.  Is this something I can help her with or should I get her to a vet?  She is eating and playing as normal and loves being held until she tries to fly, then the pain takes over and she becomes very aggresive.  Please help.  Thank you.
ANSWER: Hello Connie.  Thank you for your post.
I know that your Avian Vet is quite a deal away, but I do suggest that you take your little feathered-friens to your Avian Vet.
Molting does take a lot out of a bird, however, if the feathers are that uneven, hten that is a warning sign that there's a problem.  It may be something as simple as a pin feather growing wrong under the right wing, but to be on the safe side, I do recommend getting her in to be seen.

Please keep me informed on how your bird is doing.

God luck and God Bless.

QUESTION: Thank you Dianna for answering my question so quickly.  I was able to get in touch with the breeder that I got her from and he told me how to hold her so I could get a good look at her wing. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.  He suggested that sometimes when birds molt, their wings don't always come in evenly.  Either way, he is coming this weekend to have a look at her.  I am very lucky to have such a wonderful breeder who cares about birds so much.  Again thank you.  I love this web site and will keep it on my list of favorites.  connie

Answer
Hi again Connie.
Please let me know what the breeder says.  I know that sometimes pin-feathers that are growing in awkward are difficult to spot.  I had a cockatiel in my home that had that happen.  After the feather grew out a bit, it was fine.

God Bless.
