Question
I was recently given a conure by a friend...i looked at the band on his leg and it reads FZZ649.  I was wondering what type of conure I have and if this band can provide me with alot of information.

Answer
Hi, Deonna.  Thanks for posting!

The band won't tell what type of conure you have.  If you can describe it to me in detail or provide a picture, I can tell you what species you have.

This band number doesn't say much.  In fact, it doesn't even indicate the year your conure was born.  The FZZ is most likely the breeder's initials or the initials of the breeder's business name.  The 649 is most likely the breeder's number associated with the bird.  You would have to contact all the company's that issue parrot leg bands in order to find out who they may have sold leg bands to with FZZ on the bands.  Once you've found the breeder, you would have to ask about leg band 649.  But this would only tell you about the breeder, when the bird was likely born, and who the breeder sold the bird to.  In order to find out where  the bird has been since then, you'd have to contact each person who sold/bought your bird.  Is this a closed band (flat circle of metal all the way around) or an open band (round circle of metal with a small space between ends)?
