Question
Hi Jess, I'm Nicole and I'm 13 years old. I just got two new "boy" pet finches. One is a zebra finch and the other is a society finch. I've had my pet finches for a couple of days now. they get along great, and I'm pretty sure that're used to their cage now. But I want to start taming them, so I can hold them and play with them. I have to addmit, I'm kind of afraid of them bitting me. lol. So can you give me some tips on how to tame my finches? and do they bite? If they do, is it hard enough to draw blood? Thank you sooooo much Jess.-Nicole =]

Answer
Congratulations on your new pets, sounds like they are doing well. Finches can be nervous birds so you will have to spend a lot of time talking to them before you begin handling. Then you will need to put you hand inside the cage so that they get used to this before you even try to handle them. Once they are used to this you can try to encourage them to go on to your finger using treats if they will eat them. It can be a slow process but worthwhile in the end when you end up with friendly, happy finches. Don't worry about them biting you, it shouldn't hurt that much as their beaks are different to parrots who can give a very painful bite. I don't think that finches will draw blood but if you start to handle them slowly then they shouldn't really bite you anyway. Hope this helps and if you need any more help just ask.
