Ringneck and budgies

Question
QUESTION: Hi we have recently found a young Ringneck, and was wondering if it would be ok to be with two budgies until we find the rightful owner? The cage is about a meter squared.

ANSWER: It would be best to get him a cage of his own because you don't know this bird at all and he may not get along with your budgies. In theory the two species could live in a cage together, but this ringneck may not be used to other birds and, since he is most likely terrified of his new home, he may try to protect his new "territory". If you don't have the money for a cage, talk to a local shelter or privately owned pet store. Usually they get drop-offs and don't use the cage the bird came in (for space purposes) and will let you borrow the cage until you find his owners. I hope the little guy finds his family!

QUESTION: Thank you for the quick response. We have had to put him in the cage, and he seems to be getting on fine with the budgies, he is eating well and starting to make noises. We will keep an eye on him and see if he behaves himself. Now my question is do we take him out and play with him or should we just leave him alone?

Answer
I'm glad that they're getting along! If he is tame and friendly, by all means, play with him. This will keep him tame so that if you never find the owners and decide to keep him, he will be a good pet, and the owners, if you find them, will be very grateful that you took such good care of him. If he's not tame, you can try to handle him, but it's not 100% necessary. I hope he gets to go back home soon!
