lovebird bonding

Question
hi
I have a few questions about lovebirds and bonding.  if i leave for a couple days, but set it up so a person could come in and check on s/he, what would be the risk of the lovebird getting sick (or is that a myth?).  also, are their any tricks to getting a lovebird to bond with two people (my fiance and i would like a lovebird as our first child, and would prefer it loving both of us, or at least being nice to and not attacking the one s/he hasn't bonded with)
your advise on this matter would be greatly appreciated
thank you
suzie

Answer
Hi, Suzie.  Thanks for posting!

Do you already have a lovebird in your home that isn't tame or that has bonded to just one of you?  From your post, it isn't clear if you already have a bird or are contemplating purchasing one.

A parrot will be just fine while you are gone.  Be sure to have someone check on, feed, and water it daily (or a couple times per day).  A bird may miss you and act differently because s/he doesn't know where you are, but s/he'll get over it quickly once you return.

You would want to start out with a just-weaned, handfed, tame bird (one that was handfed as a baby and imprinted on humans) that has been properly socialized to more than one human.  Often times, parrots tend to bond to the person who spends the most time with them and/or who they "choose" as their favorite.  Once they choose a favorite, they can still be friendly with others, however, this really depends on the personality of the individual bird and how the bird has been socialized during its lifetime.  Every bird is different so it just depends!

Come back with any additional questions.
