QuestionI just got done painting an old bird cage with rustoleum spray paint (glossy). I plan to move my orange-winged amazon back into this cage and a friend told me that she thinks that you have to use special paint on bird cages. Is this true? Thanks!
Answer You've got a beautiful bird! They are stunning! You also have a very good friend who brings up a good point.
Check the can of paint and look for the indication that it's safe for use around children and/or on children's toys, furniture, etc.. Often there's a little pic of an adult holding the hand of a child.
If it's child safe and has dried over a period of no less than 48 hours - you can use it with your feathered companion.
If you ever notice your companion chewing the bars - or any paint chipping off - you might want to consider having it professionally sand blasted and powder coated. Honestly, it's just so worth the peace of mind.
If your companion isn't a bar-chewer AND the paint indicates it's safe for use in children's rooms/toys - you're home free and as long as it's dry-dry-dry (48 hrs or more), there should be no problem.
