Lovebird beak health

Question
My peach-faced lovebird is about 2 months old, and I've just
noticed that her beak appears to be peeling.  Is this normal for
baby lovebirds, or is this an symptom of something more
troubling?  She is otherwise happy and healthy, and has so far
stuck to a consistent diet of pellet, seed and crazy corn.  Any
advice is appreciated.

Answer
Hi, Taemi.  Thanks for posting!

It would help if you could explain more clearly what you mean by "peeling."  Is beak material actually peeling off or does the beak look like there might be "layers" at the tip (or other part of beak?)?  Beaks are made out of the same material our fingernails are made of, so beaks do peel, but your baby's beak at 2 months of age shouldn't be completely hard yet.  I can't remember how young a bird I've seen this in, but if it looks abnormal to you, call a local bird vet and ask the office technician about it.  Are you sure it isn't dried on food or something that's coming off?  Could this be at the tip of the beak and the beak is growing and it looks like it's peeling?

There's lots of general information about parrots on my website if you'd like to visit:

Come back with some more details and I might be able to advise further.  Congrats on your new baby!
