Question
hi. I have been keping a coletion of parrots including budgerigars, cockatiels, mulga parrots and bourkes parrots for about 5 years now and have never had any problems until recently when I placed a breeding box in my aviary in an attempt to breed my bourkes parrots. I have a pair which I beleived to male and female but was not entierly shure. A few days after I put the box in i noticed that the male was entering it frequently. I thought that this was a good sighn but the next day I noticed that the male would now attack the female whenever she came close to the box. This behavior has continued on for a few days and I am becoming woried that one or both of my birds could be injured. I have had no previous experince with bourkes so I am hoping that you might have an idea as to whats going on.

Answer
Have you had them DNA sexed? It sounds like one of them is being hormonal and is being over protective of the nest. What age are they? You need to remove the nest box because one of them will either get seriously injured or they will lay eggs and the hormonal parrot won't let the other one in and the babies will die. Perhaps a trip to the vet would help. Maybe they don't feel comfortable in the aviary with the other birds if that's where they are living. I dont think its a good idea to start breeding these birds until you get more experience with them and do a lot more research into their care and behaviour. Good luck
