My first Quaker

Question
Yesterday I purchased my first Quaker from a local petshop where I had spent time with him for two days. He seemed like a very smart, loving bird and walked around the shop with me both days. I brought him home and set up his cage and spent some time with him before my daughter and I took a nap. Well after we both woke up I tried to get Marley to step up on my finger and he started biting at me. He kept on and even today when I let him out of his cage he continues to do the same thing. He isn't like he was in the shop and I don't know if I just need to give him space or keep him in the cage or what. I'm at a lost on the steps after bringing a Quaker home. What do I do now?

Answer
Hello Shanah! He is scared. And remember that Quakers are very territorial. You must stay calm and try a couple things, like taking a towel and try to catch him in it very gently. Then calm him by petting him and letting him remember how kind you were before you brought him home.Let him stand on your finger and talk in a calm soothing voice to him, it doesn't matter what you say, just be kind and calm. Now, imagine being small, and someone taking you away from your home by giants- that's what he feels and he can't reason with a huge brain, only a parrot brain-see what I mean? Now that you have him calm and trusting you again practice the step-up. Maybe tempt him with somthing he likes to eat. Later practice it when he is in his cage. Repetition will make it second nature to step up when you offer your hand. Now when he is hormonal, he may have this problem again so don't stress out just do this again. Birds tend to forget you if you don't spend time with them often. You have to build a relationship with him over years so don't think you won't ever have a close one, just work at it and get to know him.Best wishes for you all!! Christy
