Lovebird babies

Question
My lovebirds have had two baby birds that are now in their own cage, they are about 2-3 months old.  Can these two stay together as a pair, or do I need to find them each a mate that is un-related to them?  It appears that one is male and one is female. I believe these birds mate for life, and I want them to be happy and healthy.

Answer
They don't HAVE to be with a mate to be happy. That's a common mistake people make with lovebirds. BUT once they're paired, you can never separate them because they will die. If you're sure you want them to mate and have babies, I would find them each a different mate. The reason there are so many diseases passed on in birds is because lots of breeders will let their birds inbreed (if one pair has lots of babies, the babies will do the same, so they pair up the babies and thus pass on the diseases and weaken the immune systems just like in humans). Just make sure that you have a full workup on the new mates for the babies so you don't end up passing on diseases like polyomavirus and psittacosis.
