WHATS WRONG WITH BEA?

Question
MY YELLOW NAPE AMAZON (BEA) IS ABOUT 11YEARS OLD. I'VE HAD HER FOR ALMOST FOUR YEARS NOW. BEA IS USUALLY A VERY TALKATIVE BIRD, BUT LATELY FOR THE PAST WEEK SHE HAS BEEN DOING MORE SLEEPING THAN USUALLY. MAKING LOUD SNORING SOUNDS, AND FOR ABOUT TWO DAYS NOW SHE HAS STARTED BOBBING HER HEAD LIKE SHE HAVE SOMETHING IN HER THROAT OR LIKE SHE IS CHOKING.ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNING. BEA'S DIET CONSIST OF PREMIUM PARROT FOOD. AND SHE ALSO SHARE A PIECE OF MEAT OF BREAD WHEN WE ARE EATING. SHOULD I BE ALARMED.

Answer
The head bobbing is typically associated with a bird attempting to regurgitate to another bird, baby bird, favorite human or even an object in their cages.
It may also be a symptom of infection or other disease, which, given the other behavior changes as you describe, makes me concerned.

By the time a bird shows signs of illness, it's been going on for a while and there's usually no time left to hesitate.

PLEASE take her to her doctor!  If she doesn't have a doctor, now is the time to establish one. Be sure it's a vet experienced with bird care, an avian vet is ideal.  Many make house calls and the cost is very reasonable.
We have our birds checked at least once or twice a year no matter what - just to be sure the doctor's records are always up to date and the birds are familiar with an exam.

Finally, Bea needs some diet changes. Bird seed, even the high priced products, are probably one of the main causes of health problems, including fatty liver disease.  Any of the pelleted diets is much better, with approx. 20% of their diet supplemented with seed (never sunflower seeds).

At least one meal a day needs to be fresh or frozen vegetables and whole grains.

Take a look at our birds and how to best handle this at www.4AnimalCare.org (click on 'birds' when you get there).

But for now - get her to the vet - please!
