Question
Hi, my baby Macaw is now 9 weeks old, the whites around his beak periodically go quite a pink color, what does this mean please.
Is it fright or heat perhaps?  And he speaks in his sleep, is this normal?

Many thanks

Answer
Yes, it's perfectly normal for a macaw to "blush".   When they're excited, engaged, learning something new and sometimes for apparently no reason, the whites of their cheeks can flush quite pink or even red.

As long as it doesn't stay this way chances are it's nothing more than that.

In some cases an environment that's too warm or hot can cause this; so can a fever.  So if the flushing/red cheeks doesn't seem to go away after a minute or two, you might want to follow up with a vet visit, but I wouldn't expect it.

Also, yes, now and then to soothe themselves a bird will talk in the night.
