Question
Thanks Carol, I don't think I'm going to breed, but now I have another problem, my degus were fighting today so I separated them, but I don't know why they were fighting, but if it is a problem with domanance I don't want to have to seperate them forever, but if it does come down to that do I need to get other degus so they won't be alone? If I need to do that then do I need to get females so it doesn't happen all over again? Thanks for your help.

P.S. Pullman is in the bottom right hand corner in Washington.

Answer
Some goos spat occasionally, others go at it pretty much from puberty on.  There is no way to know without putting them back together.  They almost always will tussle a little, which is no biggie.  If you see either guy getting really hurt then they'll need a break.  If you get new same-sex cage mates you still have the issue of fighting as a possibility with them too.  If you were to get females to avoid the whole dominance thing, then either the male or female would need to be surgically sterilized or else there will be babies.  Your best bet is to re-introduce them gradually and see how it goes.  Taking them each out and giving them lots of 'people' attention will give them time apart that isn't so lonely.  If it turns out they do need to be permanently apart place a divider in the cage so they aren't really alone, they just can't harm each other.
Good luck!
