Question
My hamster had babies less than a week ago. They are blind and still manages to escape their mom. Luckily we keep them in a tank. I'm scared because all of them are yelping and cant reach the mom. I tried to help by moving some paper that were over them and pushing them closer to the mom. I must be cold for them, plz coment back for i am very concerned for them.

Answer
Hi,
I understand how worried you must be. Does the mom attempt to get the babies back herself? Do you give her time to get them herself? I am asking these questions because mother hamsters don't like anyone disturbing the babies at this young age and might kill them if you do. It's fortunate that she didn't. Sometimes they, like kittens, cry and attempt to walk around until the mom carries them back. I would watch for awhile to see if the mom just ignores them or eventually brings them back to the nest.
If she does not, then it may be a good idea to get a regular sized tissue, cardboard, or even better, wooden box with high enough sides that the mother can go in and out of, but not the babies. A tissue box with the top torn off might do. It may be chewed up by the hamsters, but by that time, the babies will be in no danger of not getting enough milk. Place the babies in with the mother and that would prevent escape.
Remember to do this as a last resort. The mother will, hopefully, bring the hamsters back herself, and it's always dangerous to touch baby hamsters before fourteen days of age, because of the mother's instinct to kill them if disturbed. Watch the mother to see what she does and if she doesn't bring the hamsters back, try the above trick. Let me know what happens. Good Luck
