Question
Casey
Hi Dawn,
I have had pet rats since the mid 1980's. My question is, when I handle them - they make my skin itch where they come in contact with my skin. It only lasts for about 5 minutes and sometimes leaves some little bumps on my skin. I'm thinking it might be from the urine in their hands and back feet. I have no other allergies to any other kind of animals. I use to use pine shavings for the first rat I ever had. Now I am totally dedicated to Care fresh Bedding. I'm pretty positive it's not the bedding. What do you think. No matter what, it will never stop me from having such a wonderful and loving pet as a rat ! Right now i have a female Dumbo Rat named Casey. She is a little doll ! Thank You !
P.S. I read the terms about the pictures and I would be honored if you used her picture for anything you want !
Sincerely
Doris and Casey
AnswerIt is been found that people can be allergic to rats just as some are to just dogs or just cats. They carry a specific dander that some people break out or sneeze because of contact. It is like any other allergy and you have to decide if it is harmful to you or not. If it is just bumps you can just wear latex gloves if you need to and still enjoy your rats.
I found this wonderful site that goes into great detail:
