What is wrong with my mouse?

21 15:44:54

Question
I am watching my boyfriends mice this week while he is on vacation and
one of them seems very sick. We share "custody" of them so I have taken
care of them before. When they are in my care they are very well taken
care of but he seems to neglect them a bit when it comes to cleaning
their cage. They are two female mice and the one that is sick is the
submissive mouse (I know this because her wiskers have been barbered
by the other mouse). She has no balance whatsoever. She falls every
which way. She topples over on her back, runs in wobbly circles, and
bumps into everything like she is haveing a siezure. Her eyes stay
squinted and it seems like she falls asleep when exploring or even eating.
She will be eating from her food bowl and fall head first in and fall
asleep. She looks like she is under a lot of stress but I'm not sure why.
Since I have had them I have changed their bedding from pine chips to
paper towels. Apparently from what my boyfriend says, she has been this
way for months. Please help! I will do anything to make her better. This is
breaking my heart. What do you suggest?

Answer
I have heard of this disorder that is called "Waltzing". It is when the mouse inner ear becomes infected and causes the mouse to appear to go in circles, fall over items, bump into items, and loose all balance. This also may cause them to become so unbalanced that they loose conciseness. I havent herd of a "cure" but a vet would probably give anti-botics. This website gives a video to identify if this is the actual problem.
