So can rats die from mites?  Would it be possible for me to use one of the products mentioned on the link you gave me -- all the vets near us are pretty expensive.  (Btw sorry for all the questions and thanks for answering!)

I would first go to the local pet store and see what you can get from them. It is much cheaper to treat mites vs taking them to a vet and can be done just as safely.

Mites can cause death for a rodent if untreated. Not because of the mite in general but because of the infection that is cause when the rodent scratches.

Options:
"Frontline" one pump's worth-Treat every 7 days for 3 weeks.

1% solution Ivermectin-topical - Three treatments applied at approximately 2-week intervals
