Question
hi, i bought four mice about a week ago. some of them appear to have green poop. what does that mean? it doesn't mean they're sick, does it?

Answer
Hi!

Fortunately I've never ran into a case of green poop before.. But the first thing you can do is check their diet: in addition to the daily general rodent-food mix (seeds, grain, etc), they should be getting vegetables or fruits or berries couple of times a week. Never anything with C-vitamin, and only very small amounts of cabbage and peas. Also don't go over the 'couple of times a week'-rule, and never too much of it, or the result may indeed be something along the lines of green poop. Remember the size of the mice - what may seem like a small amount to us may be a big part of a mouse's diet.

Mice also need the occasional calcium to their diet, usually in the form of a boiled egg (no yolk!) and some of the egg's shell (some mice may be reluctant to eat the shell, and I've even ran into mice who are literally afraid of it!). As a surprise to some, fancy mice also do need meat in their diet as any other omnivorous animal to remain healthy. This can be in the form of raw, spiceless minced meat, spiceless, cooked chicken meat, or if you're feeling gutsy you may ask your local petstore for live mealworms or canned mealworms/grasshoppers/crickets that are aimed for lizards. Not recommended for the faint-hearted! :-) Meat is not required very often, I'd suggest a few bites couple of times a month.

If the strange colour continues after checking their diet, do take the mice to your local vet to be examined. Best wishes!
