Question
Hi, MY FEMALE MOUSE IS GIVING BIRTH FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 4 WEEKS, I HAVE PLACED HER OTHER YOUNG WITH THE FATHER AS HE HAS PROVEN TO BE VERY GOOD WITH THEM THUS FAR. I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE FEMALE GIVING BIRTH BECAUSE SHE HAS BEEN IN OBVIOUS LABOUR FOR 3 HOURS AND I'VE BEEN ABLE TO SEE PART OF HER BABY FOR 2 HOURS. HOW LONG WILL SHE BE IN LABOUR FOR? SHOULD I ASSIST HER? AND COULD SHE DIE IF THE BABY DOESN'T COME OUT SOON?

Answer
Hello Rose,
your hamster certainly shouldn't be in labor for so long. I would get a pair of tweezers and see if you can help gently pull the baby out. Generally, you're not supposed to do this, but she's been in labor for so long that I think this may be necessery. I would also see if you can call a small animal vet and see what else can be done.
Keep me posted on how things go.
