Question
My family is considering purchasing a chinchilla from a new pet store in town. all the animals appear well cared for and the people are very knowledgeable. Would you reccommend going to a breeder still? We live in eastern Ky., specifically Laurel Cty., so who is closest? Also, what are some basic guidelines for food, shelter, etc. Thanks!

Answer
Hi there, i have no idea who is closer to you as im from ireland! Though i would recommend going to a breeder or shelter to get a chinchilla. They do better in pairs and get lonely on their own. A shelter could rehome a bonded pair to you plus it would be giving animals that are in need a home. I suggest getting some good books or joining a forum. Chinchillas need a large metal wire cage as they chew EVERYTHING! They should be fed a very high fibre diet as they suffer a lot of health problems related to diet, like dental problems and fatty liver disease. The vets bills can be quite expensive too so make sure you are prepared for that just in case. Good luck!
