Chinchilla diet

Question
Hey there!  We bought our chinchilla, Cooper, from Petco a few days ago.  He's such a cute creature.  However, we've noticed that he has not been eating any Chinchilla pellets (Kay-tee brand) since his arrival.  He eats a little of his alfalfa cubes, but when it comes to treats, he's like a little boy in a candy store!  I've been limiting his treat-intake, but he just LOVES it.  I've tried carrots and apples (small amounts), but to no avail.  If Cooper ruled the world, he'd probably eat TREATS all day!  My question(s): How can I possibly bring him back to pellets?  Are there other primary foods I can give him?  Instead of alfalfa cubes, should I switch to actual hay (unlimited)?  If this eating behavior continues, should I increase his treats?  Thanks for your help...

Answer
Hello Noel,
that's my middle name actually. :) It sounds like your chinchilla is being picky. I would switch to regular alfalfa hay for a while until he starts eating his regular food. Whick kaytee brand are you feeding him? You may have to kinda look around to figure out what type of brand he likes. I wouldn't increase the treats though as they can cause problems in the long run. He will have to learn to eat his food which can take time. I would make sure he has plenty of loose hay though.
