Second Guinea Pig?

Question
I have a two year old guinea pig and right now I am a freshmen in high school and I don't have as much time for her as I used to.  I think she's getting lonely and I was wondering if she would benefit from having another guinea pig as a friend.  I am willing to get a larger habitat.  My question is what is the likelyhood of her getting along with the new guinea pig?  She is very sweet and she doesn't seem like she would be very dominant.  Thank you.

Answer
Guinea pigs like to be in pairs like most rodents. They will get depressed and lonely if left alone a lot. I cannot tell you the likely hood of two getting along because animals are like humans and some just cant stand one another. Here are some tips to think about when getting your next guinea pig.

1)Sex
-it is best if you wish not to breed to get another female. You want to introduce them in a neutral setting and give each one time to get to know the other. Putting their cages next to one another or getting a divider cage that the divider can be removed after time.

2)Adequate space
-You want to make sure that each guinea pig has enough space and their own house to go into. It is less likely they will argue if they have space to go into and be alone at time and plenty to run, play in. Here is a great site that tell you how much space each guinea pig needs.

3)Remember that in any case each guinea pig is going to have to try to be "in charge" so you will hear a lot of talking and  even jumping as they get to know one another and determine who is in charge. As long as their is no physical harm done (scratches, bites, blood) then it is normal and on the right track.

I hope that this helps and thank you for asking all experts.
