Male pig smell

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I was wondering what the horrible smell is that
comes from my male guinea pigs bottom, the
other male (in a seperout cage) dosent smell
at all, and the smell only seems to come when
he comes in contact with the new female friend
we have got him, he has been nuted and also
has a over active oil gland, but when she's
around a horrible smell comes about and a
what looks like a White pulp comes his back
side, he dosent have any problems going to
the toilet so that ruled out impaction, but we
always have to pull this stuff out other wise it
gets stuck their. Do you know what it is and
what we can do to prevent it or help clean it??

Aaron

ANSWER: There are several reasons for this. Since he is neutered there has to be another reason .Guinea pigs(males) tend to smell when aroused or with other males because of their scent glands, but it shouldnt be this bad or making any type or white substance. Here are some option to look into.

1)He could have a urinary tract infection (UTI). The most common symptoms of UTIs are blood in the urine and squeaking while peeing, although guinea pigs may not have either of these symptoms. Another symptom of UTIs is "malodorous urine". But it has been known to cause a fowl odor

2)In addition to UTIs, guinea pigs with bladder stones have similar symptoms. Another urinary tract problem that guinea pigs can have is urine scald. Urine scald is caused by urine constantly in contact with the skin in the genital area, leading to loss of hair and red, irritated skin. It also causes the guinea pig to have a very strong smell in that area.

3)Male guinea pigs sometimes develop smegma, a cheesy and smelly secretion from the sebaceous glands that collects around the penis. Hold your guinea pig on his back on your lap. Gently press on his abdomen above his penis so that his penis will protrude. If it is covered with a white, cheesy looking substance, than this is the cause of his smell. If it is clean, then this isn't the problem.

If your guinea pig does have smegma, you can use ChlorhexiDerm Flush, a liquid used for cleaning out dogs' ears, to remove the smegma. I use a Q-Tip dipped in the liquid and gently wipe it off.

QUESTION: Many thanks

We had a good look yesterday and the smelly stuff isn't around his penis but
actually inside one of his bottoms, I'm not sure which one is for his regular
poo and which is for the ones they eat, would the smegma of got inside
their???

Answer
That is a good question. I researched this and only found one article that referred to having smegma on the bottom from impaction, however, you ruled this out. I can only come to the assumption that he somehow got it from one area to another some how. I also found where it can be tubercle bacillis which is segma but in the bottom. However it stated that it is mostly red and not white so this is contrary to what you are seeing. I can only assume that he may have smeared i in some way. Very interesting situation! Here is the the link to the article and it may give some insight into what you are experiencing with your Guinea Pig.
