Question
QUESTION: Hi
It's Adriana Again.
I must say..I LOVE this site lol

Anyway, I've been doing research on the different types of chinchilla.
Now, I had originally thought, that Leo, was the "standard grey" but, it doesn't really seem that way anymore.

Leo is a light grey. I've heard and read up on that "standard greys" are grey yes, but a dark grey.
Is this true?

Leo is a nice light grey. He's 1 year and about 2 months now. Do you think he's a "standard grey", but young one? Are  "standard greys" light when they are young?

Leo is a light grey. He's got pink ears, and dark eyes.
On his for head, he's got that little darker line of grey. But not too dark. Its only darker then his original fur.

What do you think? Can you help me out? If this helps....he was originally priced at $150.
Thank you
Adriana

ANSWER: Hi there,

If your chinchilla is young he will probably end up changing. They either get darker or lighter. I know in most mutations they get lighter from birth but my chinchilla seems to be getting a lot darker.

Your chinchilla having PINK ears (especially your colour of chinchilla) is NOT a good sign at all; this simply means he is overheating and it could be fatal. Especially in the summer months they can't do at all without air conditioning. Do you have air conditioning? If not, when owning chinchillas this is ABSOLUTELY nescessary.

Here is a link of the most common mutations. Your chinchilla might be there in the first section. Under the 'Ebony and Blacks' section.

So, you say you love this site then? Why is that? :-)

QUESTION: Well, no. I have an AC. I really wouldn't think he's ill or hot. Its cute cool in my room. So, his ears are naturaly pink.

I was actualy rong on his eyes tho. He's got red eyes.

I'll take a look at that site you gave me. :)

Answer
Hi there Adriana,

Red/Pink eyes you say....That must mean that he is either a 'Pink White' (White fur, pinkish ears & pink/red eyes.) OR a 'Homo Beige' (Very light cream colour with light pink eyes.)

If he is white or similair be very careful to not let him catch any sunlight as he could get burnt extremely easily which could cause cancer in the ears.

Have a look at this link, it is better than the previous one I gave:
