Chinchilla Help

Question
My chinchilla is still very small and I don't think he is doing so well... He has a yellowish wet spot always under his chin. I tried to check his teeth and compared with another chinchilla but I couldn't tell any difference. My mom doesn't want to take him to the vet again. She doesn't care if he dies. What should I do? I want to fix the problem. I took some pictures with a digital camera of him. I could email them to you or something if you want. Thankyou for the help you have given.

Answer
Hi there,
I would love to be able to help you more but this chinchilla sounds in desperate need of veterinary care and that sounds like his only chance. It sound like his teeth are overgrown but it could be his molars and not his front ones and this means that you wouldnt be able to see them. A vet would have go give the chinchilla some gas to use instruments to see into the back of his mouth and burr or file down the teeth as needed. Im not sure how expensive this is but without it the chinchilla could be in extreme pain and may starve to death. Maybe you could give him to a sanctuary or rehome him to someone who will take him to the vet. Its the only thing that I can suggest to prevent him from suffering, if he has dental problems he will need vet care throughout his life. Its always something that should be considered when getting a pet, small animals can be cheap to buy but they can often get sick and it may cost a lot of money to treat them. Good luck with making a decision
