Question
My chinchilla book says that chinchillas favor carrots. Well, when I put a baby carrot in his cage, He freaked out! When he approached it, he looked interested, but when he got close,he jumped and make a quivering squeaking noise. I tried numerous carrots and made sure they were fresh. They weren't cold or wet, and when I tried one, it was fine! My Chinchilla is four to five months old. HELP!

Answer
Dear Leslie,
thank you for your question.
I think your chinchilla is just scared of the carrot, maybe it doesn't like the colour. Chinchillas should have fresh food only in very small amounts, it's more a treat for them than anything else, they don't need it as a part of their normal diet. If you can get dried carrots (or dry them yourself), you can try to offer those. the pieces are smaller and should look less threatening to your chinchilla or you cut up the carrot.
I hope I was of some help to you
